Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd have played major roles in keeping the USA at #1 in the world

The U.S. Women’s National Team remains No. 1 in the latest edition of the FIFA Women’s World Ranking that were released today by the world’s governing body of soccer. The USA remained in the top spot despite the triumph of Germany at the 2013 European Women’s Championships in which the Germans defeated Norway 1-0 in the Final to secure their eighth title and once again underline their dominance of European women’s football.

Germany, which experienced some hiccups in group play, actually lost points in in the rankings due to the loss to Norway and draw with the Netherlands in the first round before winning all three knockout games by 1-0 scores over Italy, Sweden and Norway, respectively.

Germany is still sitting comfortably in second place ahead of Japan, Brazil and Sweden, which round out the top five. Other teams in the top ten who moved up include Canada (7th, up 1), Australia (8th, up 2) and Korea DPR (8th, up 1).

The USA did not play a match during the last rankings period which ran from June 21 through Aug. 2. The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking will be published on December 13, 2013.

Nine players on the roster come from NWSL clubs, including Renae Cuellar of the Seattle Reign who is already playing for Sundsvall in Sweden. Cuellar scored five goals for F.C. Kansas City before being traded to the Reign, for whom she did not score.

The 26-year-old Ocampo scored three times in three games during August, including the game-winning goal against the Washington Spirit in a 1-0 victory on Aug. 3.
