On the USA's first full day in Japan back on Aug. 12, the team had the opportunity to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and take in some history while paying respects to those who lost their lives on that tragic day in 1945.
They say that travel is the best classroom, and the U.S. players were honored to be able to see the memorial, visit the museum and promote the most important lesson of the day: peace.
USA captain Julie Johnston laid a wreath at the park’s memorial.
“I think it was important to go to the site as a team,” said Johnston, a rising junior at Santa Clara. “It was very emotional and a great thing to show the people our respect. It is important to look back to understand the country where we will be based for the coming weeks and to understand the history.”
