- The U.S. and Costa Rica are all square in the all-time series with a 12-12-6 overall in international play.
- The teams have met six times in the Gold Cup (1991, 1993, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2005), making the Ticos the USA’s most common opponent alongside Mexico.
- With five wins and one draw, the MNT remains unbeaten in the tournament series.
- Of the six meetings, three have come in the group phase and three in the knockout phase.
- The last meeting between the teams in the tournament also came in the final group match when they dueled to a 0-0 draw on July 12, 2005, in Foxborough, Mass.
- Josh Wolff and Jeff Agoos scored to lift the U.S. to a 2-0 win against Costa Rica in the title match of the 2002 Gold Cup. Donovan appeared in the starting lineup that day.
- A year later, Donovan would be joined by DaMarcus Beasley in the first XI when the U.S. overcame a deficit and captured a 3-2 win in the third place match.
- That duo entered off the bench in the 0-0 draw in 2005. They are the only two players on the U.S. roster to face Costa Rica in the Gold Cup.
- Donovan is the only U.S. player on the roster to have scored against Costa Rica.
- Four players on the current roster took the field in the Snowclasico on March 22 in Colorado: Beasley, Kyle Beckerman, Herculez Gomez and Clarence Goodson. Tony Beltran, Joe Corona, Sean Johnson, Nick Rimando and Brek Shea were all on the bench (and shivering).
- Four players appeared in the 2-2 draw on Oct. 14, 2009, in Washington, D.C. that secured the USA’s first place finish in the Hexagonal prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup: Donovan, Holden, Onyewu and Torres.
- Onyewu went down in the 83rd minute of that match with a patellar tendon rupture that sidelined him for nearly six months. Meantime, Jose Torres started the play in the 94th minute that led to a USA corner kick and the game-tying goal from Jonathan Bornstein.
- Six players appeared in the USA’s 1-0 loss on Sept. 2, 2011, in Carson, Calif., the first defeat for Jurgen Klinsmann as head coach of the U.S. National Team: Edgar Castillo, Landon Donovan Michael Orozco, Brek Shea, Torres. Portland Timbers defender Rodney Wallace tallied the game-winner.
