Closed-Door vs. Denmark

The USA's Sunday afternoon training session consisted of a closed-door scrimmage against Denmark, which is in Group A of the Algarve Cup along with Germany, Norway and Japan and like the Germans, Norwegians, Swedes and Icelanders, are preparing for the 2013 European Women's Championships this summer.

The teams played three 30-minute periods and U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni used all 20 available players in the match. The USA's three France-based players -- Tobin Heath, Megan Rapinoe and Lindsey Horan -- did not arrive until Sunday evening and did not play.

The USA came away 4-1 winners, scoring three times in the first 30 minutes. Alex Morgan scored in the 4th minute in a goal that came off a USA counter-attack following a Denmark corner kick. Lauren Cheney released Baby Horse on a gallop with a nicely textured pass into the left side of the penalty area and Morgan finished from a tight angle.

Abby Wambach had a header goal disallowed for offside in the 7th minute, but the USA got one that counted in the 10th as Carli Lloyd finished a cross on the ground from Heather O'Reilly. Morgan added her second in the 29th minute on a nice dribble from the left flank into the middle before finishing into the lower right corner with her right foot from the top of the penalty box.

The Danes pulled a goal back in the 45th minute off a free kick that was headed up in the air by the U.S. defense, headed back across the goal by a Danish player and bundled into the net at the left post.

Sydney Leroux finished the scoring in the 68th on a header via a cross from Christen Press.
