Western Conference Clubs Draw in Colorado

San Jose Earthquakes and the Colorado Rapids tied last Saturday night in a Western Conference matchup in front of 14,664 supporters. The Rapids extended its unbeaten home streak to six matches, while San Jose recorded its second draw in the past two games.

MLS News: The Colorado Rapids and the San Jose Earthquakes played to a 1-1 draw over the weekend at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the Centennial State. The Major League Soccer (MLS) matchup welcomed local supporters and traveling soccer fanatics in town for US Club Soccer National Cup.

In the 11th minute, Eduardo ‘Chofis’ López opened the scoring with Cade Cowell as the provider. From the left flank, Cowell dribbled along the top of the 18-yard box to the center of the field. He passed the ball to López who collected, took another touch to his left, and finished with a placed strike into the bottom, right corner.

Colorado kept the pressure on for the remainder of the first half. In the second half, the hosts found the back of the net with Cole Bassett on the scoresheet and Nico Benezet as assist provider. An unsuccessful clearance by San Jose gave the Rapids possession of the ball at the top of the penalty area. Bassett received a high pass from Benezet, brought it down, picked his head up and finished a low strike to the far, bottom post. The local and traveling supporters erupted in support of the Colorado Rapids. The tally was Bassett’s third goal of the season, while forward Nico Benezet recorded his first assist.

The match consisted of a highlight benchmark for a Rapids youth prospect. In the 87th minute, 17-year-old Rapids Homegrown Player Dantouma “Yaya” Toure made his MLS debut.

Next, the Colorado Rapids will host FC Dallas on Wednesday, July 21, at 9:00 p.m. ET. On the 21st, San Jose Earthquakes will continue its road trip with a matchup versus Sporting Kansas City at 8:30 p.m. ET.
