The man who scored one of the famous goals in the USA-Mexico rivalry called it quits today as Josh Wolff officially announcement his retirement. Already a player/coach for D.C. United, he now joins the coaching staff on a full-time.
Wolff made 52 appearances for the United States from 1999-2008 and scored nine goals. None was more memorable then his game-winner in the 2-0 win against Mexico on Feb. 28, 2001, in Columbus, Ohio. That goal - and that game - launched a decade of dominance for the United States at home against Mexico. Wolff also played a part in the USA's biggest ever victory in the series, assisting on Brian McBride's game-winning goal in the 2-0 win in the Round of 16 at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
A two-time winner of the CONCACAF Gold Cup (2002, 2005), Wolff also helped lead the United States to a fourth-place finish at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
The Stone Mountain, Ga., native won the domestic double in 1998 with the Chicago Fire, capturing the MLS Cup and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. He added two more Open Cup titles to his credit, one with Chicago and another with the Kansas City Wizards.
Last year, Studio 90 spoke with Wolff on the 10-year anniversary of his historic strike against Mexico.
