One Year Ago Today - the 97th Minute Winner

Exactly one year ago today, the U.S. Men's National Team opened the 2012 campaign at home against Venezuela. In front of an enthusiastic crowd of more than 22,000 in Phoenix, Ricardo Clark got on the end of a Jermaine Jones corner kick in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time to deliver the U.S. 1-0 victory.

Some notables:

  • Jermaine Jones wore the captain's armband for the first time that day, and earned Budweiser Man of the Match honors
  • Ricardo Clark scored the second game-winner of his MNT career, the first the huge goal in the 1-0 win against Trinidad & Tobago in final round qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup
  • Graham Zusi collected his first cap for the National Team, and would go on to score the lone goal in the 1-0 win in Panama four days later.
  • Bill Hamid and A.J. DeLaGarza also got their first caps that day
