[FONT=georgia, palatino]You just never know who you are going to meet at an Olympic Games. As the USA was boarding its team bus to training the other day, a member of the U.S. staff spotted a familiar face standing outside the bus.
"Is that Parreira?"
"Who?"
"Carlos Alberto Parreira! The dude's a Brazilian coaching legend."
Sure enough, it was the coach of the 1994 World Cup winners whose 40-plus year coaching resume is far too vast to list here, although we will tell you he was coach of host South Africa during the 2010 World Cup.
And not only was it Parreira, who is a member of the FIFA Technical Study group for the men's competition, but he called U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage off the bus to meet her and say hi.
Pretty cool.
