The August Fixture Dates Under Jurgen Klinsmann

Staff member
This is the third time that a U.S. team under Jurgen Klinsmann competes on the August fixture date, which comes at a an interesting crossroads for players, many of whom are just at the start of their seasons. It was no different for the head coach, who led his first game less than two weeks after assuming the role. Here's how they went down.

August 10, 2011 - Philadelphia, Penn.

USA 1, Mexico 1

USA lineup: 1-Tim Howard; 6-Steve Cherundolo, 5-Michael Orozco Fiscal, 3-Carlos Bocanegra (capt.), 2-Edgar Castillo; 7-Kyle Beckerman 4-Michael Bradley (16-Robbie Rogers, 72), 8-Jermaine Jones (17-Brek Shea, 60) ,10-Landon Donovan, 11-Jose Torres (15-Ricardo Clark, 84); 9-Edson Buddle (18-Juan Agudelo, 60)

Mexico scored in the 17th minute through Oribe Peralta, but three substitutes combined for a Robbie Rogers goal in the 73rd minute to earn the Americans the tie in the regional rivals’ first friendly match since 2008.

On the goal, The USA earned a throw-in on the left flank and it was taken quickly by Castillo to Agudelo, who was almost on the end line. Agudelo touched the ball back to the charging Shea, who shrugged off the challenge of Israel Castro, burst to the end line, and then sent a pass on the ground through the six-yard box that evaded the diving Ochoa at the near post. The cross rolled right into the path of the totally unmarked Rogers at the far post, and he tapped in from four yards out.

Aug. 15, 2011 - Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico 0, USA 1

USA lineup:1-Tim Howard (capt.); 23-Fabian Johnson, 20-Geoff Cameron, 7-Maurice Edu, 15-Edgar Castillo (4-Michael Orozco Fiscal, 77); 13-Jermaine Jones (14-Joe Corona, 89), 5-Kyle Beckerman, 6-Danny Williams (8-Graham Zusi, 60), 16-Jose Torres (18-Terrence Boyd, 45); 10-Landon Donovan (17-Damarcus Beasley, 45), 9-Herculez Gomez (11-Brek Shea, 78)

The U.S. Men’s National Team defeated Mexico for the first time on its home soil in a 1-0 win at Estadio Azteca , marking one of the biggest U.S. victories in an international friendly.

Michael Orozco Fiscal scored his first international goal in the 80th minute as the United States took only its second ever lead at Azteca. The USA held out for the final 11 minutes plus stoppage time thanks to two clutch saves by Budweiser Man of the Match Tim Howard to earn its first win in 25 attempts in Mexico.
