The last meaningful match for the MNT in Portland came during qualifying for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. With a home win against Costa Rica, the U.S. would virtually guarantee a spot for France '98. Fans packed the then Portland Civic Stadium wearing white, and Nike broke out a new fan celebration tool called "bangers" to liven up the atmosphere. After several quality chances, Tab Ramos, making his return to qualifying after a lengthy recovery from a knee injury, got on the end of a Marcelo Balboa backpass and absolutely leveled a drive that streaked into the back of the net.

The United States snatched a 1-0 win that day, and after a win against Canada had packed their bags for the World Cup.
