Piero Olcese Named State Youth Referee Administrator

New York Soccer News: The State Youth Referee Administrator (SYRA) is in charge of all the youth refs in the state association. Piero Olcese has been a ref since 1980.

Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) President Richard Christiano has appointed Piero Olcese as State Youth Referee Administrator (SYRA).

The SYRA is the leader of the thousands of youth soccer refs in Eastern New York. Piero succeeds Lee Suckle, who has been promoted to East Region Youth Referee Administrator.

“I would like to work with the State Referee Administrator, the Referee Committee members and ref associations within Eastern New York to create training and educational programs that will offer youth referees opportunities to improve their overall game management skills and allow them to advance to higher levels of refereeing,” said Piero.

“Being an assessor has been a great learning experience and it has allowed me to help referees.”

Peiro Olcese

Olcese’s father Orlando was in the diplomatic corps so Piero grew up in Lima, Peru but also lived in Rome, Guatemala City plus North Carolina and New York. He played soccer for North Carolina State University and for Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, then later in the adult leagues.

Olcese has lived in Scarsdale for the past 25 years and coached his children––Piero, Carlo and Angelo––in the Scarsdale Soccer Club. Olcese and his wife Angela have been married for 39 years.

He took up the whistle in 1980, refereeing intermittently while concentrating on the youth level, then reffing more and more after he started planning for retirement from the Yonkers Police Department Emergency Services Unit in 2014. He became an assessor three years ago.

The SYRA is an administrative position and Piero has referee administrative experience as he has been President of the Westchester Soccer Referees Organization (WSRO) for the past six years.
