Sports Medicine Special Task Force


Germany’s soccer federation sought out top medical experts and teamed up with club doctors to form a special sports medicine task force to handle the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

DFL’s Ordinary Assembly launched a Sports Medicine / Special Match Operations Task Force in order for German professional football to further deal with the impacts of the coronavirus.

A report has been issued: SPORTS MEDICINE / SPECIAL MATCH OPERATIONS TASK FORCE IN PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL | VERSION 2 and it outlines the medical concept for resuming team training and match operations along with guidelines for precautions for stadiums.

In addition, the report reviews basics for zoning as well as static and dynamic planning of staff requirements.

So as to ensure the best medical framework possible in the event that match operations resume, the task force has developed a binding concept under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Tim Meyer, Medical Director of the Institute of Sports and Preventive Medicine at Saarland University and team doctor for the German national team. Other members of the task force include Prof. Dr med. Barbara Gärtner, medical specialist for microbiology and infection epidemiology; Saarland University, PD Dr med.

In America, the Major League Soccer (MLS) has created a task force to monitor the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic as well. The league in the USA works directly with governmental agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Public Health Agency of Canada.

Werner Krutsch, medical specialist for orthopedics and trauma surgery; FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, University Medical Centre, Regensburg, and Dr. Markus Braun, a senior physician at the sports medicine department of Klinikum Westfalen, team doctor for Borussia Dortmund and spokesperson for the team doctors in Germany.
