US Youth Soccer’s Cal South Has Changes At The Top

The youth soccer landscape is constantly changing and leadership at the top level is always critical to an organization’s success.

Cal South former Executive Vice President Roy Carlson stepped up to take over the role of President of the US Youth Soccer state association last month. Bob Turner, the former Cal South President elected last year by a significant majority resigned on February 12, 2021.

Carlson was the Vice President of Youth prior to becoming the Executive Vice President. An attorney for Milberg & De Phillips, P.C., Carlson lives in San Diego, California.

“I am honored to be allowed to continue to serve the organization I have been a part of since 1982,” said Roy Carlson. “Like many, I have experience in many roles within the organization including as a parent, head coach, assistant coach, goalkeeper coach, team manager, referee, club director, club president, Pro+ scout, and state association board member.”

Carlson is a member of the US Soccer Appeals Committee and a member of the USYS Risk Management Committee. He has also passed the English FA Playmaker course and the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding Essentials course.

Carlson began coaching in 1982 for San Diego United, and also coached for RB Nomads and Mesa Soccer Association, where he was also a member of their board and a past president. Carlson was also a staff coach and scout for the Cal South Olympic Development Program from 2003-2010. Carlson has also been the head of the Cal South Hall of Fame Committee.

In addition, Carlson is the Secretary of Region IV of US Adult Soccer, a member of the US Adult Soccer Rules Committee, Chair of the Region IV USASA Rules Committee, a member of the Region IV USASA Grant Committee and was a Member of the US Adult Soccer Cups Task Force. He has served on many committees within Cal South, and is currently chair of the Executive Committee and the Audit Committee.

“Although these are challenging times, it is a great opportunity for us to provide enhanced support for our leagues, clubs and players and their families,” said Carlson. “We look forward to working with everyone to advance and improve soccer.”
